The Schipperke is a small, energetic dog breed known for its lively and inquisitive nature. Originating in Belgium in the 1600s, these dogs were initially bred to serve as watchdogs and ratters on canal barges, earning them the nickname "Little Captain" and "Little Skipper." They possess a distinctive fox-like appearance and feature a black coat with different lengths of hair, particularly a ruff, cape, and culottes. Schipperkes are highly intelligent and require regular exercise and mental stimulation to prevent behavioral issues. They are loyal and affectionate with their families but can be wary of strangers, making early socialization crucial.
