Pont-Audemer Spaniel
The Pont-Audemer Spaniel, or "Ponto," is a rare French gundog breed named after the small city of Pont-Audemer in Normandy. Known for its distinctive curly coat and playful demeanor, it is often referred to as the "little clown of the marshes." With a history dating back to the 19th century, the breed was developed from water spaniels, particularly the English and Irish types, to excel in both water and marsh environments. It was traditionally used for hunting ducks and rabbits. Despite being nearly extinct after World War II, efforts have been made to revive the breed through cross-breeding with other breeds, notably the Irish Water Spaniel. Today, the Pont-Audemer Spaniel is recognized by several kennel clubs, including the Fédération Cynologique Internationale and the United Kennel Club, for its friendly, adaptable nature and excellent hunting capabilities.
